Over the past 4 decades, the poverty rate of theUS elderly population has fallen by more than 60%, and the most recent data (2005) show that only about 1 of every 10 people aged 65 and older (3.6 million) earned less than the poverty level.1 Yet, the poverty rate of elderly widows is 3 times higher than that of elderly married women.2 Recent studies pro-vide convincing evidence that out-of-pocket health care expenditures incurred prior to the death of a spouse are partially responsible for the impoverish-ment of the surviving spouse.3, 4 As much as one fourth of the increase in elderly poverty after widowhood has been attributed to end-of-life (EOL) out-of-pocket health care expenditures.2 This added financial burden may also be related to ...
