Defining eScience Librarianship

Over the last decades seasoned librarians have seen their profession transformed by the Internet and its subsequent digital revolutions. The Journal of eScience Librarianship seeks to be a venue for innovative ideas and research that reflect how the information age, and in particular data-intensive research, is continuously reframing the varied models of librarianship. This is also a space for practitioners in the field to articulate the multiple intersections of librarianship with new kinds of technology, regardless of discipline. Indeed, researchers in every field imaginable are utilizing new technologies and digital tools and producing enormous amounts of data. Some in the library profession are eagerly embracing the necessary changes to integrate these datasets into their libraries ’ collections and are looking for ways to improve this new practice. Some are anxious about what integrating these datasets into the library’s collection will mean for their craft and their future. But both sides should find consensus in the reality that libraries and librarians will have a role in eScience; I write this with confidence because there are very talented library colleagues at universities, libraries, and research institutions across the globe doing amazing work and carving out these new roles for us
