Lingual carcinomas were produced at var-ious sites on the hamster tongue by local application of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthra-cene. The period of carcinogenesis, degree of infiltration, and frequency of metastases were different according to site. The lateral border of the middle third of the tongue was most sensitive to the carcinogen and showed the most severe infiltration and fre-quent metastases. Experimental production of oral carcinomas with chemical carcinogens has been consid-ered to be difficult. We succeeded, however, in producing lingual carcinomas in 100 % of our attempts by scratching the lateral borde
