IDENTIFIERS Welfare to Work Programs This study investigated the effect of welfare mothers' educational attainment on their young children's academic outcomes and school readiness. Data came from the National Evaluation of Welfare to Work Strategies Child Outcomes Study. Welfare recipients with young children residing in three cities were randomly assigned to participate in either an education-first program or a work-first program. A control group received no additional programming. Data were collected on client characteristics, prior welfare receipt, past educational attainment, current educational activities, employment history, and demographics.
