Variations in skewtless and kurtosis in sediments from the central northeastern Irish Sea can 'be related to 'the mixing o £ two or more grain size populations in various proportions. Kurtosis is high and skewness 'pronounced where one population is dominant, but both are low where populations are subequal. Such varia-tions occur in a fairly regular manner from west to east across the basin as a result o £ the deposition off successively finer grained sediments with decrease in velocity of the transporting tidal currents
