Psychoanalysis has a unique connection with anthropology in that it uses &dquo;alien&dquo; ways of thinking-the dreams of its founder, neurotic fantasies, psychotic delusions, child’s play, myths from other cultures-as its very subject matter. Cross-cultural findings have in turn been pressed into service to evaluate the generalizability of psychoanalytic propositions. The aims of this article are to trace the implications of cross-cultural findings for psychoanalytic theory, and to assess the contribution of psychoanalysis to a cross-culturally valid conception of human nature.
