Major advances in travel-mode choice modeling are reviewed. These include a shift from aggregate to disaggregate models and a shift from physical and eco-nomic variables to cognitive and behavioral variables. Developments in mode-choice studies are assessed, and possible directions for future development are suggested. Even though the automobile has long been the dominant mode of personal transportation in the United States, serious investigations of why consumers prefer automobiles to alternative transportation modes have taken place only in the last 20 years.
