As a group, the status of African Americans ’ health is pre-carious from cradle to grave. A vast majority of African American women, 80.5%, are either overweight or obese (National Center for Health Statistics, 2009). As a result, they are more susceptible to a host of weight-related health issues, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, stroke, gall bladder disease, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, 2008). In light of this disparity, this study focuses on overweight and obesity among African American women.
