T he 18 essays on language and liter-acy learning in this volume were written by Courtney Cazden at differ-ent times during the past 20 years. In the introduction, Cazden states that the book advances a single argument about literacy education, namely, that immer-sion in rich literacy environments is necessary, but not sufficient. This argu-ment presumably is what the first part her title—"whole language plus"—is intended to reflect.
