Background: Although Nepal’s maternal mortality ratio has fallen over the past decade, unsafe abortion remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. A key strategy for improving access to safe abortion services is to train mid-level providers such as nurses in comprehensive abortion care (CAC). The Family Health Division of the Nepal Ministry of Health trained an initial cohort of 96 nurses to provide first trimester CAC services using manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) between September 2006 and July 2009.
