This volume is the first of three which report the results of the five-year Education Improvement Program in Durham, North Carolina. Volume I describes the original proposal, the research strategies employed, the intervention rationale, the curricular programs developed, the characteristics of the subjects and their families, and the results of the overall program of educational intervention. Approximately one-half the document consists of tables, charts, and graphs. The three volumes together constitute the final report to the Ford Foundation. Followup studies using the data gathered during the five-year span of the program will be conducted during the next fey years and reported in the appropriate professional journals.
