I would like to thank Brian Butler for spending time with my book and taking the trouble to review it for Film-Philosophy. I was pleased to see that many of its main ideas, such as the juxtaposition of noir and race, came through in his review, and that some of the case studies, as he correctly describes them, seemed worth discussing at length. I also found Butler’s link between my book and the U.S.’s 2008 Presidential campaign intriguing. That insight shows a breadth of application I did not anticipate but happily embrace. However, I would like to address some misunderstandings I feel Butler has about my project and allude to aspects that I believe would be of interest to the journal’s readership, but were not raised in his review. One of the great values of Film-Philosophy is that it provides an international forum for the discussion of philosophy and film, and in doing so allows for exchanges between thinkers from vastly different theoretical perspectives and locales to explore their commonalities as well as their disagreements. I think that there is more to say about my work in this context than Butler’s review suggests
