The Rainbow Visibility Project has the primary goal of raising awareness to sexual orientation as a diversity issue at the University of San Diego (USD) (California), a Roman Catholic liberal arts university. It was designed to be consistent with other efforts supporting the cultural competence at the university, whose mission statement explicitly advocates the "recognition of the dignity of each individual. " However, gay and lesbian students, staff, and faculty expressed incongruity between the university's stated mission and goals and their experiences of invisibility and, when visible, harassment.
