Trie nucleot ide sequence of the smaller genomic strand (RNA-2) of the b i p a r t i t e tobacco r a t t l e virus (CAM strain) has been determined. RNA-2 Is capped at the 5 ' terminus and contains 1799 nucleotide residues. There Is a s ingle 223 codon long open reading frame extending from nucleotide 574 to 1242 which designates a protein of Mr 23,654. The derived ami no a d d com-p o s i t i o n, 1n percent, matches that previously determined for the virus cap-s1d p r o t e i n. The long open reading frame 1s flanked by 5 ' and 3 ' untrans-la ted regions of 573 and 554 nuc leot ides, respec t ive ly. The 5 ' leader sequence contains two di f ferent sets of direct repeats, one of 119 nucleo-t ides and the other of 76. I t also contains 13 apparently unused AUG codons, four of which H e 1n the same frame as the caps Id protein d s t r o n. The 3 ' terminal sequence of RNA-2 1s Identical to that of the larger genomic strand (RNA-1) for 459 nucleotides
