Obesity is a widespread epidemic. In addition to significant health risks, obese persons report impaired levels of health-related quality of life (HRQL; Fontaine, Cheskin, & Barofsky, 1996), which refers to the overall impact of a condition on physical and mental functioning and well-being (Fontaine, Barofsky, & Lawrence, 1997).
