Talpade Mohanty's work has framed the issues for global feminist organizing. Her article, "Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses " (1991), has become a touchstone for feminists struggling to grapple with the relations of imperialism and their implications for feminism. It interrogated the ways in which geographic location and different histories structure relationships between feminists; in particular, it considered how a Western gaze defined feminist knowledge of Third World women.
