Brief Communication: Mixed Culture Cytopathogenicity Induced by Virus Preparations Derived From Cultures Infected by Simian Sarcoma Virus 1,2

SUMMARY-The development of an XC cell mixed-culture cytopathogenic reaction in dog embryo fibroblasts and a canine tumor cell line, M.132-1, infected with simian sarcoma virus preparations are de-scribed.-J Natl Cancer Inst 49: 571-577, 1972. C-TYPE VIRUS particles were demonstrated in a naturally occurring fibrosarcoma in a woolly monkey (1). Subsequently, virus replication in muscle cell cultures of woolly monkey origin was re-ported (2). Recently, tumors were induced in mar-mosets by a cell-free preparation of the original woolly monkey tumor (3) as well as by tissue-cul-tured marmoset cells transformed by the virus. These tumors, cell lines established from them, and in vitro-transformed marmoset cells all con-tained typical C-type budding virions (4). We reported results on an XC cell (5) mixed
