The recent advances in thoracic surgery have necessitated a considerable development of diag-nostic methods in cardiovascular disease. The introduction of cardiac catheterization as a routine method of examination has made it possible to diagnose malformations of the great veins of the thorax, the right side of the heart, and the pul-monary artery with accuracy. Pressure measure-ments and the deterioration of arterio-venous shunts within the heart give evidence of abnormal com-munications between the heart chambers or great vessels. However, there are still difficulties in the diagnosis of diseases exclusively localized to the left side of the heart and the aorta and of mal-formations where the abnormal communicatio
