The non-classical HLA class Ib genes, HLA-E,-F, and-G, are the only HLA genes found to be expressed in trophoblast cells in the placenta along with low expression of HLA-C. HLA-G, which is the best studied of the non-classical HLA class Ib molecules, has been found to be implicated in pregnancy complications due to its immunomodulatory function at the feto-maternal interface. As the structure and expression of HLA-F resemble that of the other class Ib molecules, especially HLA-G, it is hypothesized that it might also play an important immunological role during pregnancy.
