The radiative processes involved in combustion were investigated to determine the present r o l e of radLant energy transfer in conibustors. It was sham that, a t present, the amount of radiant energy t ransfer from flasle t o f u e l is quite small in a turboJet c&ustor. In order t o f ind techniques f o r making.this radiant energy t ransfer from flame t o f u e l significant, methods of Fncreasing the equivalent gray-body e d s s i v i t i e s of t he fue l drops and the flame, as w e l l as the efficiency of the energy t ransfer i t se l f, w e r e examined. The equivalent gray-body emissivity of a hydrocazbrm f u e l may be increased by the use of l iquid or solid, soluble or nonsoluble, addl-t ives. It was found that the nonsoluble solid addi t ive was the most desirable one. In addition t o the f ac t that a slurry-type drop may have a peater emissivity, the suspended solid addi t ive may also greatly contribute to the emissivity of the flame.
