This guide takes ' an eclectic approach to literacy training, that is, it allows the instructor to select those materials and methods that best fit the needs of individual-learners. It includes a definition of the target population which Will-include adults who are nonliteiate, preliterate, semiliterate, and thOsSe who are. literate in a non-Roman alphabet. A section of the book describes the goals and content of literacy training, a summary of pre-reading skills and minimal competencies, a checklist for,the teacher, and 10 pre-reading activities. The next section deals with teaching functional language skills and the bas. vocabulary and structure which will have immediate application o the daily living situations in which immigrants find themselves. T e third section of the guide presents a rationale for teaching writing and an initial lesson plan for introducing numbers. The final section on teaching reading 4 discusses teaching the association of the oral and written form and, provides lesson plans for teaching sight words, sound /symbol relationships, and the experience story technique.
