Full list of author information is available at the end of the articleIntroduction Lip and oral cavity cancer is the 15th most common cancer worldwide, and the 15th most common cancer in Europe with more than 300,000 and around 61,400 new cases diagnosed in 2012 respectively (in both cases 2 % of the total) [1]. The incidence in Europe of oral cavity and pharynx cancer in 2012 was 99.6 per 100,000 [2]. In some areas of the world, especially those with a lot of sunshine, the most common sub-site for cancer of the oral cavity is the lip [3].
