Intestinal microfold (M) cells are an enigmatic lineage of intestinal epithelial cells that initiate mucosal immune responses by uptake and transcytosis of luminal antigens. The mechanisms of M-cell differentiation are poorly understood as the rarity of these cells has hampered analysis.
