Full list of author information is available at the end of the articleBackground Glutamate decarboxylase 1 (GAD1) catalyzes production of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from L-glutamic acid, the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain [1,2]. GAD1 is associated with development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [3] and many cases of the Stiff-Person syndrome [4]. The murine model of cleft palate also lacks GAD1 expression [5].
