Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactivemolecules, mainly generated insidemitochondria that can oxidize DNA, proteins, and lipids. At physiological levels, ROS function as “redox messengers ” in intracellular signalling and regulation, whereas excess ROS induce cell death by promoting the intrinsic apoptotic pathway.
