In marine sediments cathodic oxygen reduction at the sediment surface can be coupled to anodic sulfide oxidation in deeper an-oxic layers through electrical currents mediated by filamentous, multicellular bacteria of theDesulfobulbaceae family, the so-called cable bacteria.
