A t any given time, over 2 million peo-ple are incarcerated in prisons andjails in the U.S (1). It is estimated that nearly 80,000 of these inmates have diabetes, a prevalence of 4.8 % (2). In ad-dition, many more people pass through the corrections system in a given year. In 1998 alone, over 11 million people were released from prison to the community (1). The current estimated prevalence of diabetes in correctional institutions is somewhat lower than the overall U.S. prev-alence of diabetes, perhaps because the in-carcerated population is younger than the general population.
