Estrogen and estrogen metabolite-induced reactive oxygen species generation can promote oxidative DNA base damage. If unrepaired, base damaging lesions could accelerate mutagenesis, leading to a ‘‘mutator phenotype’’ characterized by aggressive behavior in estrogen-estrogen receptor (ER)-driven breast cancer.
