Background: Physiological stress evokes rapid changes in both the innate and adaptive immune response. Immature ab T cells developing in the thymus are particularly sensitive to stress, with infections and/or exposure to lipopolysaccharide or glucocorticoids eliciting a rapid apoptotic program.
