Many studies have shown that NO has protective effects on human airways such as muscle relaxation, attenuation of airway hyper-responsiveness to bronchoconstrictor stimuli, and the killing of invading microorganisms [1]. In contrast, adverse effects of NO have also been observed, such as vasodilation of the bronchial circulation, increased airway secretions and the promotion of pro-inflammatory path-ways, as well as necrosis and apoptosis [1].
