The purpose of the review is to: (a) provide information concerning the physiology of lung cancer imaging with fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET); (b) clarify the role of FDG–PET in the diagnosis of solitary pulmonary nodules; (c) summarise the accuracy of PET scanning in the staging of lung cancer both in regard to mediastinal nodal staging and the staging of distant metastases
