Abstract. We report a new approach for matching regular surfaces in a Rie-mannian setting. In this setting a deformation vector field is defined on the surface directly and the motion of the surface does not involve motion of the ambient space. This is in contrast to LDDMM, in which a prescribed defor-mation of the ambient space drags along an embedded surface. In particular, this approach performs matching using an inner metric defined on the space of surfaces. We also show how to discretize the corresponding geodesic equation and compute the gradient of the cost functional using finite elements. 1
