In the past decade both scientists and laymen have probably heard at least once through the newspapers, TV and Internet that a new aster-oid has been discovered with non-zero (sometimes “high”) probability of collision with the Earth in the near future. Since early 2000’s, such prob-abilities are routinely calculated by two impact monitoring systems (one in the US, the other in Europe) on preliminary orbits of newly discovered Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs), and are regularly updated whenever addi-tional new astrometric observations for each threatening object become available. A typical pattern is that as the orbit becomes more precisely determined, impact probability often increases initially, but then turns around and decreases until it fal...
The collision of an asteroid with Earth can potentially have significant consequences for the human ...
Potentially impacting asteroids were analysed for their impact risk on the Earth. To this end, the A...
Short-arc orbit determination is crucial when an asteroid is first discovered. In these cases usuall...
In this paper we define the a posteriori probability W. This quantity is introduced with the aim of ...
We describe systematic ranging, an orbit determination technique suitable to assess the near-term Ea...
The subject of this thesis is the Impact Monitoring (IM) problem: in particular, the mathematical th...
Asteroids represent the majority of minor bodies in the solar system. Some of them, known as Near Ea...
ESA’s asteroid risk list contains all known asteroids that have a non-zero chance of colliding with ...
Asteroids that could collide with the Earth are listed on the publicly available Near-Earth object (...
Asteroids that could collide with the Earth are listed on the publicly available Near Earth Object (...
Some asteroids and comets with Earth-crossing orbit may impact our planet, thus we need to be able t...

Our solar system is full of different bodies, including asteroids, that represent the majority of ob...
Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of asteroids travel in orbits that intersect the Earth’s orbit. Some ha...
