A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON KINETIC PROPERTIES, LIVABILITY AND ABNORMALITIES OF CANINE SPERMATOZOA

A preliminary study was undertaken to assess the kinetic properties by using Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) technique, livability and abnormalities of spermatozoa of dogs. A total of 22 ejaculates from 2 dogs, belonging to 2 different breeds were used for analysis of motion characteristics of spermatozoa using HTS-IVOS computer assisted semen analyzer (CASA) on two analysis set-ups. The livability and abnormalities of spermatozoa were assessed using conventional methods. The overall means for kinetic properties, namely sperm motility (%), progressive sperm motility (%), path velocity (m/s), progressive velocity (m/s), curvilinear velocity (m/s), amplitude of lateral head displacement (m), beat cross frequency (Hz), straightness (%) and linearity (%) were 84.23 ± 4.41, 40.95 ± 3.69, 119.05 ± 3.50, 92.61 ± 3.03, 203.14 ± 8.50, 8.18 ± 0.32, 21.77 ± 0.83, 71.20 ± 4.68 and 48.55 ± 2.19 respectively. The overall means for ejaculate volume (ml), live sperm (%), total abnormalities (%), head abnormalities (%), mid-piece abnormalities (%) and tail abnormalities (%) were 0.78 ± 0.12, 88.11 ± 1.26, 23.44 ± 3.86, 5.16 ± 0.93, 0.45 ± 0.25 and 18.65 ± 3.51 respectively.
