Preliminary Study on the Feasibility of Utilizing the Detection of Coastal Areas Change in the Use of UAV

ABSTRACT: Coastal areas have been witnessing a rapid change due to reclamation projects, development of harbor business, and coastal area development business. In addition, it takes much time and budget if utilizing the previous measurement method. The objective of this study is to confirm the feasibility of establishing the information of change in the use of UAV as an alternative of accurately and swiftly building information of coastal areas change. Using the ortho-photo and digital elevation mode (DEM) acquired by UAV based on intertidal zones in the west coast where it was difficult for ships to access at, the feasibility of utilizing the establishment of information in changes of erosion/ sedimentation by the difference of tides on river bed has been confirmed. In addition, the feasibility of correcting/ renewing the information of changes accurately and swiftly was confirmed by using ortho-photo acquired in UAV with information of changes in the coast from newly installation of artificial structures based on harbor areas of the southern coast of Korea where there was much of development in coastal areas. As a result the feasibility of application and effectiveness in accurately and swiftly acquiring and renewing the information of changes in many of the small-si zed randomly selected areas in the use of UAV has been confirmed. 1
