In recent decades there have been increasingly loud calls for ‘authentic leaders’. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the emerging field of authentic leadership. It begins by identifying how authentic leadership has been defined. It then highlights some epistemological challenges of this definition. Finally, it discusses some implications of these challenges for authentic leaders and for the study of authentic leadership
