Economic Geography Study Group

The Economic Geography Study Group took on its present name during 1992-93, transforming itself from the previous Industrial Activity and Area Development Study Group. It is hoped that the change of title will in time be seen as more than purely superficial. The group plans to broaden its perspective and engage with a series of broader theoretical and policy debates. Preparations are already underway for a major session at the 1995 annual conference at Northumbria on 'New challenges for economic geography', and the group hopes to initiate discussion in the run-up to this. In the year under review, the EGSG organised a two-day conference on the theme ' An integrating Europe ' (in September 1992) and jointly sponsored three sessions at the 1993 Royal Holloway annual conference: ' Demography, labour force change and economic restructuring ', ' Teaching economic geography ', and ' Young researchers in economic geography '. For the 1994 annual conference in Nottingham the group is again involved in organising three half-day themes: ' Retail capital and consumer culture ', ' Feminist theory and economic restructuring ' (jointly with the WGSG), and 'Young researchers in economic geography'. Conferences in September 1993 will examine 'The place of music ' (organised with the SCGSG and the Landscape Research Group) and ' The geography of the British hospitality industry’
