O ver the past half century, Jim Angell has madepioneering contributions to meteorology, espe-cially to our understanding of climate variabil-ity, stratospheric processes, and the ozone layer. On 4 November 2003, many colleagues and friends gathered at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra-tion (NOAA) Science Center in Silver Spring, Mary-land, for a 1-day symposium reviewing and honoring Jim’s career achievements and celebrating his 80th birthday (which was 2 November).
