ARCHITECTURE AND ART: ART MUSEUM DESIGN

Due to the most prevalent ideology of modernism- the “functionalism, ” art museum is commonly understood as quantifiable set of different functions and functional blocks, as exhibition area, storage area, commercial spaces, etc. Therefore, the theorizing of museum space is usually “sentenced ” to preconceived architectural ideas and design techniques concerning the question of “what should an art museum be consisted of ” more than the question of “how Art realizes itself through architectural space. ” Then again, if we tune our understanding of architectural programme as a cultural construct and hence historically shaped sets of conventions that are hard to shift but yet prone to evolve, then we would start to rethink art museum as a product of specific cultural necessities of which the most intrinsic is our relation with art, how we value it, how we learn about it and how we enjoy it in relation to architectural space today
