response to the UN’s appeal for suggestions on what should replace the eight Millennium Development Goals that come to an end in 2015. Entitled ‘Ending Poverty in Our Generation’, the report outlined an ambitious new development framework which, it said, could help all countries end extreme poverty in the next 20 years.1 It was the first time that an organisation proposed specific new targets to replace the MDGs.2 The theme was taken up with alacrity and the idea of ending extreme poverty by 2030 became rather an anthem in the following months.
