est, named Cuneiform, originated in the Sumer region of southeastern Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq. This script was a collection of approximately 1,000 pictographs represent-ing objects; eventually, abstract concepts were added to the language. The pictographs were written in a vertical column on a clay tablet with a reed serving as a stylus. The reed left a wedge-shaped impression. Around 2500 B.C.E. th
