Abstract: Conformity and conformism are found in all societies and present themselves as opposites to autonomy, individual choice and the importance of one’s personal values. I try to assess different types of conformism and try to see when it might be seen as justifiable and compatible with self-chosen and deliberated behaviour. This requires that we distinguish conformism from situations where people mechanically copy each other’s behaviour and which, in my view, should not be coined as instances of conformism
