the knowledge of herbal medicine is extended from tribal folklore to highly evolved systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani. Shankhpushpi is a reputed drug of the Ayurvedic system of medicine, which has been used for centuries as a brain and nervine tonic, alternative and laxative (Nadkarni 1976). It is considered to be astringent, hot, aphrodisiac and rejuvenating, and is useful in treating epilepsy, insanity, insomnias, heart diseases and haemetemesis (Chuneker 1982). In addition, it improves strength, digestive power, complexion and voice, and cures intestinal worms, animal poisoning, skin diseases, cough, diabetes, dysuria and uterine disorder. Shankhpushpi is a Sanskrit word meaning the plant with flowers shaped like a conch shell. The botanical identity of shankhpushpi is highly controversial. At least three plants, viz. Clitoria ternatea L. (Fabaceae), Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy. (Syn: Convulvulus microphyllus Sieb. ex Spreng. (Convulvulaceae) and Evolvulus alsinoides L.
