The writer of the first of these volumes began his observations, and studies among the Hidatsa Indians in 1906, when he was a Presbyterian minister in North Dakota. During a later pastor-ate in Minneapolis, he was a student of anthropology in the graduate school of the University of Minnesota, and in this, connection, during the years 1912 to 1915, this work was pre-pared as his doctor's dissertation. It is a translation of the accounts given to the author by Maxi'diwiac (Buffalobird-woman), daughter of Small Ankle, who was leader of the Hidatsa at the time of their removal to what is now Fort Berthold Reservation, on the Missouri River about 75 to 125 miles north-west from Bismarck.
