The tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, is one of the most important crops in the country, entering Brazil among the ten main producers worldwide. In 2011, the world production of tomato, both fresh market and industry, reached 159 million tonnes in a cultivated area of 4.73 million hectares and average yield of 33.6 tonnes/hectare (FAO, 2013). The area under organic management worldwide reached 37 million hectares in 2010, considering that from 2004 to 2010, the area of organic vegetables grew 34 % (Willer & Kilcher, 2012).
