The preparation of peptones as microbiological media from fish muscle and fish waste has yielded promising results. One of the samples, prepared from the heads and viscera of freshwater fish, was found to be equal to oxoid bactopeptone in growth promotion of organisms with stringent requirements such as Lactobacillus arabinosus and Streptococcus jaecalis. Papin treatment at 40°C for 4 hours followed by vacuum drying gave a pale yellow hygroscopic product contalnint 20.4 percent of amino Nitrogen. A method which relies on autolysis could be adopted for certain types of waste such as mackerel waste which has a high proteolytic activity
