As a developing country India is making advances in the field of technology, research, infrastructure and skilled manpower. However, much of these advances are limited to metropolitan cities and urban areas. In healthcare too, such disparity exists. The Indian Council of Medical Research has the mandate to foster inter-sectoral coordination in health research between scientific departments, private sector, academia; strengthen their network; develop trained manpower for research and develop systems that will bring useful advances in health research available to all sections of society. Guidelines for Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) outlines the principles and procedures to be followed by medical laboratories involved in clinical research and/or patient care so as to provide quality data which can be used for health research and patient treatment. As the use of laboratory tests (often expensive) are increasingly becoming a part of medical diagnosis and research, generation of quality data would be a cost-effective and ethically sound strategy. Adoption of GCLP guidelines by laboratories of public sector, private sector and research institutions will be a step forward in the betterment of health care services and health research.
