What can comparative perspectives from the global south tell us about the meteoric rise of the new middle class? They suggest that we should be wary of purely quantitative/objective characterisations, taking subjective forms of identity more seriously. This 2-day workshop, which includes position papers, short presentations and intensive small-group discussions of key texts, crafts the opportunity for African scholars to take ownership of the middle class conversation, in dialogue with those working on the topic from elsewhere
