Abstract A novel hydroxyethylammonium maleate sin-gle crystal was grown by slow evaporation solution method for the first time. The structure of the title compound is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The linear optical properties were studied using ultraviolet–visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The third-order nonlinear optical property of title compound was studied by Z-scan technique to determine its nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction. Thermal property was studied by thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and dif-ferential scanning calorimetric analyses.
