This study explores the potential of dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) for the sim-ulation of nano and microfluidic systems, with a focus on droplet formation. DPD is a mesoscopic particle method, which allows for larger time steps than molecular dynamics. Recent advances in the treatment of walls have demonstrated the applicability of DPD to nano and microchannels, however some basic issues remain such as the definition of adequate inflow and outflow boundary conditions, as most simulations have, so far, used periodic and wall boundary conditions. We discuss solutions based on conservation of mass and conservation of thermodynamic properties to simulate spatially developing flows using DPD I
